The Citizens Committee for New York City and the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust Grants are getting ready to hand out grants of up to $5,000 for grassroots environmental projects in low-income areas. “We want a strong action component from the community, something demonstrating a concern for the environment in low-income areas,” said Diane Greene Lent, who heads the Citizens Committee’s Neighborhood Environmental Action Program (NEAP). Past grant recipients include groups planting trees in Harlem and a campaign to use of gas heat instead of coal in schools. Last year, NEAP gave out 17 grants, totaling about $50,000. For applications call 212-989-0909. The deadline is Feb. 20.
