Pablo Mayor’s Folklore Urbano Orchestra: El Barrio Project

Pablo Mayor’s Folklore Urbano Orchestra and Pajarillo Pinta’o dance company team up for a theatrical concert exploring themes of culture, immigration, tradition, and love through music and dance. Pablo Mayor collaborates with choreographer Daniel Fetecua and other composers, with theatrical direction by German Jaramillo (ID Studio Theater). The production is high-energy dancing and modern choreographies based on Colombian rhythms and salsa, theatrical drama, and the smoking repertoire of Pablo’s renowned Colombian arrangements and compositions, highlighting his latest collaborative works.

MON | MAR 27 – MAY 1 | 6:30-8:30 PM | WORKSHOP (6 WEEKS) Led by Flushing Town Hall Teaching Artist, Steve Palermo, and inspired by a variety of techniques of 20th century artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Cornell, each student will discover his or her own visual voice and style. The six-session workshop series culminates with participants' artwork displayed in Flushing Town Hall’s Green Room.

Global Mashup #4: Taiwan Meets Jamaica

We’re mashing up 2 cultures on 1 stage with an open dance floor! Featuring Stephanie Chou, saxophonist, singer, and composer whose music combines Classical and Chinese influences with jazz, and Jamaican artist Owen Romeo with his group Tribal Legacy, presenting an array of Caribbean music. Each band plays a set, then the two meet and jam.

My Mom, My Doll, and Me: Doll Making Workshop & Tea Party

Dress in your teatime finery, bring your inner child, and create your own doll! Award-winning children’s author, illustrator, educator, and FTH Space Grantee, Timothy Bellavia leads this workshop for all ages, genders, and backgrounds, inspired by notable global mothers. It also includes a tea party with snacks, read aloud, book signings, and special red carpet photo-op. For ages 4 and up.

Shanghai Memories: Golden Songs From the 1930’s and 1940’s

Narrated and hosted by Zhou Yi, this performance by Ba Ban Chinese Music Society is a demonstration of the cultural melting pot that existed in Shanghai during World War II, presenting traditional Shanghai music infused with western influences from jazz and popular music of the day. It paints a vintage scene depicting Shanghai as the Paris of the East.

From My Mother’s Mother

Celebrate Mother’s day (FREE for mothers) with a chamber opera about a Korean tradition where Korean women, post- birth, are given seaweed soup which is prepared by their own mother, and believed to assist in recovery. This story, composed by Jeeyoung Kim, deals with love and reconciliation through one mother providing something to help her daughter, only to face rejection. Performance in English with English and Korean subtitles (libretto written in English)
