Department of Financial Services to Visit Brooklyn Public Library’s Macon Branch on July 13
Bedford-Stuyvesant residents struggling to make payments on student loans will have an opportunity to better understand the options available to best meet their needs during a workshop to be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, July 13 at the Macon branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, 361 Lewis Ave. at Macon Street.
The 45-minute workshop will be presented by the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) Student Protection Unit. It will be followed by a question and answer session to address individuals’ specific issues.
A DFS representative will discuss all of the repayment options available to borrowers with Federal student loans including income based payment arrangements, as well as graduated and extended repayment plans. Other topics will include forbearance, deferment, loan consolidation, rehabilitation and student loan forgiveness. Also, methods to bring loans out of default and stop wage garnishment will be reviewed along with options for borrowers with private student loans.
Individuals unable to attend may obtain assistance by calling the DFS Consumer Helpline at (800) 339-1759, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional information may be obtained on the DFS website at www.dfs.ny.gov/studentprotection
Governor Cuomo formed the Student Protection Unit within DFS in 2014 to enhance consumer protections for New York’s students and help students build financially sound futures.
