Signal To Freedom a Quilts Exhibition By Carole Robinson

February 13, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The H-Art Gallery@Steel Imaginations, is proud to invite you to celebrate with us, Black history 2015 with guest artist and quilter Carole Robinson.
The quilts that are being presented are signals from the Underground Railroad and were a form of communication among slaves that wanted to escape to freedom. Since slaves were not allowed to read or write, the Underground codes were sewn into quilts and hung from porches or cloths lines, to let the slave community know, when, where and how to travel to freedom. Traditionally, these quilts were made from old clothing, scrap fabrics given to the slaves by the mistress of the house and in some cases old sack cloth. But done in African prints and Batiks, they take on a whole new look. The type of fabric has changed, but not the meaning.
Join us in February 13th and 14th to celebrate Black history and Signals to Freedom. For more information, please contact me @ wmorel@verizon.net or cell 914 643 4392
