Sacred Sites Open House

May 21 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

| Free

The New York Landmarks Conservancy In partnership with The Queens Historical Society cordially invite you to:

Come explore the rich art, architecture, and history found in Queens!

This free walking tour will begin promptly at 1 pm on Sunday, May 21st at the Friends Meeting House (137-16 Northern Boulevard). Built in 1694 by John Bowne and other early Quakers, the Old Quaker Meeting House is, by all known accounts, the oldest house of worship in New York State and the second oldest Quaker meeting house in the nation.

Walking along Main Street we will then visit St. George’s Episcopal Church (135-32 38th Avenue). Established in 1702 as a mission of the Church of England, today it serves an intercultural, multilingual Episcopal congregation with members from over twenty different nations of origin.

Our final destination will be the Free Synagogue of Flushing (136-23 Sanford Avenue). Founded in 1917, it is the oldest Reform Synagogue in Queens.

Time permitting the group will visit the historic Bowne Street Community Church. Originally built as a Dutch Reformed Church, it is the last link to Flushing’s history as a Dutch Colony in the mid-17th century, a period associated with the Flushing Remonstrance and John Bowne.

This tour is presented in conjunction with the Landmarks Conservancy’s seventh annual Sacred Sites Open House, May 20th and 21st. For more information about participating sites please visit www.sacredsitesopenhouse.org
