Bronx Concert Singers’ 35th Annual Spring Concert

May 22, 2016 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Join The Bronx Concert Singers (BCS) and music director Robert René Galván on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 4:30 pm for their 35th Annual Spring Concert at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1891 McGraw Avenue, in Parkchester, Bronx, NY. The program features Mozart’s Requiem and works by Schubert and Brahms performed by the BCS chorus, with keyboardist Tamara Cashour, professional soloists and chamber orchestra. For more information please call (917) 743-4641, visit www.bronxconcertsingers.org or email BCS_info@bronxconcertsingers.org.

Maestro Galván has selected moving and exhilarating vocal and instrumental works by three esteemed Classical and Romantic era composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Peter Schubert and Johannes Brahms. The program begins with two contrasting works that highlight the power, beauty and depth of the female solo voice.

In Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody, Op. 53, the composer combines brooding orchestral sonorities with despairing mezzo soprano tone colors to express the themes of isolation and dejection found in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem, Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey Over the Harz Mountains). The work ends with a glimmer of hope as it moves to the calming key of C major and the lone soloist is joined by the comforting, welcoming voices of the chorus. Next is Schubert’s heroic composition for soprano and chorus, Mirjams Siegesgesang (Miriam’s Song of Triumph) D.942, a celebratory cantata, with text by Franz Grillparzer, based on Exodus 15:20 – 21. This work captures Miriam as she is praising God for allowing the Israelites to safely cross the Red Sea and for vanquishing their enemy, the Egyptians.

The second half of the program is dedicated to the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of classical music’s most revered composers. Mozart shares a special place in the hearts of many classical music lovers, and his Requiem in D minor, K.626, is one of his most admired and performed sacred works. Unfinished at the time of his death in 1791 the Requiem was completed by composer Xaver Süssmayer. For this concert Maestro Galván has chosen the Peters Edition vocal score, #76. In addition to the Requiem the program will include two more works by Mozart, the spirited Violin Concerto No. 4, in D Major, I. Allegro, K.218, and the reverent motet for chorus, Ave Verum Corpus, K.618.

Soloists for the performance are: Melissa Raymond, soprano; Angelika Nair, mezzo soprano; Anthony Cinelli and Dale Smith, tenors and Dalton Taylor, bass.

Tickets are available in advance and at the door from BCS: General admission is $20 / two for $35, seniors and students with valid ID, $15 and children through high school, $5.
