The Institute for Children and Poverty seeks an experienced individual to manage day-to-day operations, and supervise a skilled staff of assistant directors, and both junior and senior level research associates. The Managing Director will be responsible for shaping and implementing a research agenda with the goal of generating an ongoing body of literature that will enhance policy discussions at the federal, state, and local levels. The Managing Director will be responsible for working with other research organizations, government, and the media to assure the relevance and visibility of ICP's work.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Ten years experience in a research or policy institute with direct responsibility for staff and project management.
- Advanced degree in public policy or social science.
- Demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of research projects involving primary and secondary data collection and analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in qualitative and/or quantitative analyses of public policies.
- Experience directly supervising and mentoring staff
- Demonstrated ability to establish and/or maintain collaborative relationships with other research and public policy organizations.

PROJECT DIRECTOR - HCZ ASTHMA INITIATIVE--Bridgestar--Project Director, HCZ Asthma Initiative
The magnitude of the childhood asthma epidemic in Harlem led to the formation of the Harlem Children's Zone Asthma Initiative in 2001. This innovative intervention includes medical, environmental, educational, social and legal services. Health workers visit the home, nurses review each child's asthma symptoms, medication use, school absences, and emergency room visits and work with the family to develop an action plan for improving asthma care.
The Director reports to the Chief of Pediatrics at Harlem Hospital and leads day-to-day operations of the initiative, which has a staff of 20 and a budget of $1.5 million. Major responsibilities include:
Managing program evaluation;
Managing relationship with the primary donor, Robin Hood;
Diversifying the funding mix.
The ideal candidate has a deep commitment to children's health and to low-income communities. S/he will be high-energy, politically savvy and persistent in the face of obstacles.
Qualifications:
At least five years experience managing a complex program.
Experience managing staff.
Experience managing program evaluation.
Experience managing relationships with donors.
Experience bringing structure to a growing program.
Flexible, comfortable with ambiguity. Experienced consensus-builder.

Have a basic knowledge of HTML, and a willingness to poke around in more complicated code when necessary.
Some knowledge of housing and community development issues and experience with grant writing is also preferable.
