(New York, NY) – The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District (BID) will hold eight weeks of free programming—fitness classes, tech courses, games, and entertainment—on the Flatiron Public Plazas in the shadow of the iconic Flatiron Building this summer.

The BID will mark the opening week of the 2017 Flatiron Summer Series with a special event—in partnership with the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath)—to celebrate the Summer Solstice on Wednesday, June 21. Starting the day before that, activities will run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through August 10 on the Flatiron Public Plazas at 23rd Street, Broadway and Fifth Avenue.

“Our free, lively programming on the Flatiron Public Plazas is the perfect way to spend a summer evening in New York City,” said the Flatiron BID’s Executive Director Jennifer Brown. “Each year our Summer Series draws more residents, employees, and visitors to the plaza. We’re really excited to offer them a great lineup of fitness, tech classes, entertainment, and more in 2017.”

The 2017 Flatiron Summer Series will include:

Opening Week Summer Solstice Sundial Event

On Summer Solstice—June 21 —from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM, the BID and MoMath, will host a giant Sundial Event in the North Public Plaza. Cast your shadow to mark the time on the longest day of the year. Join MoMath in creating a large-scale human timepiece and leave your personal mark on a jumbo sundial banner that will be displayed in the nation’s only Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) through the end of June.

Tech Tuesdays

Since 2012, the BID, in partnership with General Assembly, has provided the neighborhood with a series of free tech education classes. This year, instructors from General Assembly and local institutions and businesses, including Baruch College Division of Continuing and Professional Studies, ThoughtMatter, and Touro Graduate School of Technology, will teach classes on the South Public Plaza from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.

Wellness Wednesdays

This summer, the BID continues to partner with Athleta Flatiron to provide free fitness classes on the South Public Plaza. The classes will be held on eight consecutive Wednesdays from June 21 to August 9 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, and taught by instructors from local studios, including exhale Flatiron, Gotham Jui Jitsu, NY Personal Training, SIN Workouts, and—new to Wellness Wednesdays—New York Health & Racquet Club.

Throwback Thursdays

Every Thursday, the BID will set up a game station that is free and open to the public on the North Public Plaza. The station will include board games, a giant connect-4, and cornhole sets. Games will be available starting at 11:00 AM. Local businesses will join in on the fun to provide free cultural education and entertainment, such as a book binding demonstration by the Center for Book Arts.  At 6:00 PM, the BID is partnering with local businesses like The Jazz Gallery, The PIT, and The Metropolitan Room to stage performances. On July 13, Throwback Thursday will feature a frozen custard social called “Mid-Summer Scoops” with complementary frozen custard provided by Shake Shack.
