WIA Works

Employers who get workers from “one-stop” centers funded by the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) are largely happy with the results, according to a recent General Accounting Office (GAO) report. A survey of employers found that about three-quarters of them were satisfied with the results and would be likely to use the one-stop system again. There is, of course, room for improvement: The smaller the company, found the GAO, the less likely it is to know about or make use of one-stops, suggesting that the system may be more convenient for large companies (those with 500 or more employees). For next steps, the GAO recommended that the federal labor department begin routine collection of state data on use of the workforce programs, to determine, for example, whether employers utilize one-stop centers’ training services or merely fill job openings. The Department of Labor agreed.
