Roughly 200 immigrant students and their supporters rallied June 10 at John Paul Jones Park in Bay Ridge to urge Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY) to support the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. If passed, the DREAM Act would allow the 65,000 undocumented students who graduate from U.S. high schools each year, otherwise ineligible for financial aid, to apply for conditional or permanent residency in order to access higher education. Fossella, the only New York City representative who has not yet signed onto the bill, did not return City Limits calls by press time. According to Global Kids, an estimated 6,500 undocumented students will graduate from New York City public schools this year–roughly 15 percent of the city’s total graduating seniors. [06/21/04]
