FYI: The immigration activists who campaigned to end the federal “special registration” program say their fight isn’t over just because the Department of Homeland Security has terminated the program. The campaign planned a rally and press conference this morning to drum up support for those still in detention and facing deportation. They want lawmakers to step in and allow these individuals to remain in the country. Immigration officials detained an estimated 17,000 people for visa violations during the life of the program, and placed 14,000 in deportation proceedings. A November Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund report argued that over 42 percent of these people had greencard applications pending. [12/10/03]
