FYI: The staff of the 30-year-old MFY Legal Services unanimously voted yesterday morning to go on strike, with the work stoppage taking effect immediately. Management and staff at the legal aid organization have been locked in contract negotiations since May, and workers have been without a contract since June. Represented by the Legal Services Staff Association, the attorneys, paralegals and administrative staff charge MFY’s board with cutting back healthcare, leave and seniority benefits, while the board argues that it has offered salary and benefits on par with other legal services groups in the city. According to LSSA president Ghita Schwartz the two sides had not spoken since Tuesday, but hoped to meet sometime today. The union also planned a protest outside MFY offices this afternoon. [10/30/03]
