FYI: A coalition of environmental groups is inviting New Yorkers to drop off their “electronic waste” this afternoon to be recycled or re-used by low-income families and educational institutions. The Upper West Side Recycling Center, Sustainable South Bronx, and Per Scholas (a Bronx-based electronics reconditioning group) will accept unwanted electronics, in whatever condition, from 3 pm to 8 pm this evening at St. John the Divine Cathedral uptown. They’re taking everything from computers to PDAs to toner cartridges (no small household appliances like microwaves, no stereo equipment and no cameras). What can be refurbished will be donated and the rest will be recycled in order to keep lead and other electronics-related pollutants out of landfills. [8/20/03]
