FYI: City Councilmembers Joseph Addabbo, James Gennaro and David Yassky joined environmental groups yesterday in calling on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to preserve city-owned wetlands by consolidating control over them in the Department of Parks and Recreation. A dozen city departments currently own 2,719 acres of wetlands across the five boroughs, much of it on Staten Island. The parks department is better equipped to oversee these properties, the council members say, and under its protection the wetlands could not be developed without approval from state legislators. If Mayor Bloomberg doesn’t act to transfer the land, the council members will try to legislate the transfer in the fall, according to Yassky spokesperson Evan Thies. [8/1/03]
