FYI: The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene announced plans to set up new community health centers in three underserved communities, according to Judy Wessler of the nonprofit Commission on the Public’s Health System. The centers, each staffed by seven to ten people, will be called District Public Health Offices and will serve Northern Manhattan, the South Bronx and Central Brooklyn, all areas identified as having disproportionate problems with preventable diseases. The offices are designed to work with existing community-based initiatives seeking to providing health information and services and monitor health problems. [7/10/03]
