FYI: A New York County Supreme Court judge approved a settlement yesterday in a long-standing class action lawsuit, Davila vs. Eggleston, that will make it easier for single parents on welfare to go to school and give them more flexibility in finding work. Under the settlement, welfare workers must assess the needs of welfare recipients and create “employability plans” for them, which may include training or school assignments. Recipients can appeal those plans if they disagree with them. The settlement also calls for the city to pay for child care and transportation costs for single parents on welfare going to their jobs or classes. [7/3/03]
