FYI: In a sudden policy change, police have begun arresting day laborers that gather by the hundreds along Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside, Queens to look for short-term contract work. Workers and community organizers report that in recent days police suddenly began picking up the largely undocumented immigrant men for minor infractions and for not having residency documents. An NYPD spokesperson declined to say whether the department has changed its approach to dealing with the tensions that build between day laborers and residents of some of the neighborhoods where they gather to find work.
