FYI: Mayor Bloomberg announced this morning the creation of a new court to deal exclusively with felony gun possession charges in five Brooklyn precincts that account for more than half of the borough’s shootings, and a quarter of those citywide. The five precincts encompass Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush and East New York. One judge and three specially assigned assistant district attorneys will handle all cases, each of which must be dispensed within 120 days. Meanwhile, NYPD will hone training of cops in these precincts to “identify individuals carrying guns” and to be able to “clearly articulate” in court the situations that gave them legal cause to search the individuals they identify and arrest.
