FYI: Margarita Lopez, chair of the City Council committee responsible for disability services, will lead dozens of her colleagues in calling for new laws forcing the city’s public transportation system to be more accessible today. A bill to be introduced this afternoon will seek to mandate accessibility provisions for the ferry system, which is expected to grow dramatically in coming years as part of the rebuilding of lower Manhattan. According to Lopez’s office, the bill will have 34 sponsors, enough to ensure passage. At an afternoon press conference announcing the bill, Lopez will also release a report detailing the history of the battle disability advocates have waged for access to public transportation in New York City.
