FYI: A coalition of homeless advocates, led by Housing Works, shoved the city’s recently reinvigorated policy of aggressively policing homeless people into national headlines on Christmas morning with a holiday gift for suspended cop Eduardo Delacruz. The NYPD made Delacruz into a cause celebre just days before Thanksgiving when it suspended him for a month without pay because he refused to arrest a man sleeping in a Union Square garage. Advocates for the homeless have noted a recent spike in arrests of homeless New Yorkers as the Bloomberg administration continue its predecessor’s focus on quality-of-life issues. To show Delacruz their appreciation and sympathy, activists gathered at City Hall on Christmas Eve to unveil a fund for his family, presenting them with a $3,000 check. [1/2/03]
