FYI: New York metropolitan area foundations were responsible for more than a sixth of all of the nation’s philanthropy in 2000, according to a Foundation Center study of local givers. As with foundations around the country, local grantmakers gave the largest share of their cash—more than 20 percent—to education. But New York foundations gave far more to arts and culture programs than did funders in the rest of the country. Arts and culture ranked second in terms of local foundation priorities, getting more than 16 percent of the money doled out. [12/17/02]
