FYI: City Comptroller William Thompson, Jr. questioned the sanitation department’s calculations for its recycling program Monday, saying the department has “significantly overstated the cost of recycling.” In a letter sent to the mayor and City Council, Thompson pointed to several areas in which the department has placed the cost of recycling higher than it actually is and, further, noted that expected savings from eliminating glass and plastics recycling have not come about. The number of trash truck collection shifts has dropped only two percent since cutting the glass and plastics programs. [12/5/02]
